Wainfest 2025: ‘Working over by’ Interactive Workshop

The Middle Room visited the museum in Letterkenny to take part in the Working Over By interactive workshop. This fascinating living history experience explored how people from Donegal travelled to Scotland for work over many decades, often leaving home for long periods to earn a living.

During the workshop, the pupils discovered the different types of jobs Donegal people took on, including tattie-hoking, construction, nursing and domestic service and learned about the challenges they faced while living and working away from home. They also had the chance to handle artefacts, listen to personal stories and take part in activities that helped them imagine what life was like for those who made the journey “over by.”

The visit helped pupils gain a deeper understanding of Donegal’s rich history and the resilience of its people, while making connections between the past and the experiences of modern-day migration.
